TOP TEN TIPS OF MOVING HOME

BY FOLLOWING THESE TEN BASIC RULES, WE'VE ONLY USED OUR INSURANCE COMPANY TWICE IN 30 YEARS

SAFETY FIRST...CLEAR A PATH

Look out for traps!  Make sure there are no banana skins or roller skates at the top of the stairs.  Rugs and mats can be death traps.  Care must be taken not to stack boxes too high.

...
PROTECTION...THE BIG ISSUE

Identify the larger and more difficult items to be moved.  Any glass, delicate mirror, antique furniture, or light coloured sofa that needs to be moved MUST BE WRAPPED IN PROTECTIVE MATERIALS.  We use removal blankets, massive sheets of bubble wrap, mattress covers, and top quality professional packing paper and card to protect all sensitive objects as much as possible.
3
...
CARPET PROTECTION

Light coloured carpets will need protection especially if it's been raining.  We have special reels of plastic designed specifically to protect your carpets.  This plastic can be used on staircases and sticks to the carpet a little like industrial strengthened cling film.

LOADING A VAN

One person will be in charge and responsible for packing the removal van with the rest of the men feeding him.  As balancing the load and insuring heavier items are securely tied off and everything is protected and wrapped in blankets is of paramount importance in most cases the packer will be the driver.  Flat/empty cardboard boxes are extremely effective at protecting surfaces but make sure there are enough empties handy to pack the house.  Heavy boxes on the floor, lighter ones on top.  Chairs, small pictures, sofa cushions and light bags at the front of the van on the Luton.

DISMANTLING AND RE-ASSEMBLY

Wooden and Metal framed beds are usually easy to dismantle and re-assemble with few problems and we provide this service as standard and with a smile.  Bunk beds and Ikea wardrobes are a lot more time consuming and require specialized attention to detail.

MOVING WARDROBES

Pre-assembled wardrobes are usually made of an inner chip-board core that simply isn't designed to withstand the stress of moving home.  Even with every precaution and years of experience, re-assembling certain types of pre-fabricated furniture to exactly the same strength as its first assembly is virtually impossible.  We endeavour to make this clear to our customers but don't want to concern you unduly.  Most of the time there is no discernible difference we just wish to make it clear that these modern pre-fab materials lose their strength over time.  Well-built and antique wardrobes are a different story and have been designed to withstand and last.
WHEN CARRYING A WARDROBE DOWN A STAIRWELL MAKE SURE THE BACK OF THE WARDROBE FACES THE CURVE OF THE BANISTER AS THIS IS THE MOST LIKELY PLACE TO TOUCH OR CAUSE DAMAGE.

MOVING SOFAS AND SOFA BEDS

We will protect the arms of any light coloured or vulnerable, leather or suede sofa as standard.  Full covering will be provided when necessary.  MOVING SOFA-BEDS.  Sofa beds are usually very heavy and have spring loaded steel teeth that can literally cut your fingers off.  Make sure the mechanism is secured or in extreme cases removed.

...
MOVING WASHING MACHINES

We will plumb your washing machine in and out as standard.  The special bolts that some models provide and recommend to use whilst moving are very rarely used.  We've moved literally thousands and never had a problem but use them if you want.
9
...
MOVING FRIDGES AND FREEZERS

We can take the doors off those huge double fridge freezers and have special trolleys and all the skills required to deal with any type of fridge.
BUT!    DON'T TURN ON YOUR FRIDGE UNTIL IT HAS SETTLED FOR AT LEAST 2 HOURS
.  The gasses in the bottom of fridges apparently need to settle down after the excitement of being moved.

KEYS, COMPLETION AND UNLOADING

DON'T PANIC!
In almost 30 years in the removals business there have been only 2 disasters with keys where the keys didn't come through and we had to leave the load on the van overnight and offload the next day.  Once at the new destination, unloading the van will usually be a much swifter operation than loading the van.  We'll protect your carpets and all you need to do is point.
